How AI Can Copy Your Grandchild's Voice in 3 Seconds

The "Grandparent Scam" has evolved. Here is how it works and how to stop it.

AI Voice Cloning Visual

In early 2026, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a massive warning regarding "The Voice Scam." For years, we’ve heard about scammers pretending to be relatives. But now, they don't have to pretend. They can actually **sound** like them.

How is this possible? Artificial Intelligence (AI) can now "clone" a person's voice using as little as **three seconds** of audio. Most of this audio is stolen from social media—a video posted on Facebook, a clip on TikTok, or even a digital voicemail greeting.

The Science of Sound

AI software analyzes the pitch, tone, and accent of the speaker. It then creates a digital "instrument" that the scammer can play by typing words into their computer. When they speak, it's the grandfather's grandson’s voice that comes out on the other end of the line.

⚠ The High-Pressure Hook

Scammers always rely on two things: **Fear** and **Urgency**. The call will almost always be about an emergency—a car wreck, a jail sentence, or a hospital bill—and they will beg you not to tell anyone else.

How to Defend Your Household

The Senior Safety Project recommends a three-step defense system against AI impersonation:

  1. The Family Safe Word: Establish a secret word that is never shared online. If a relative calls in an emergency, ask for the word. If they can’t provide it, it is a scam.
  2. Hang Up and Call Back: Never trust the caller ID. Scammers can "spoof" numbers to make them look like they are coming from a loved one. Hang up and call the person back on the number stored in your contacts.
  3. Listen for Distortions: While AI is good, it isn't perfect. Listen for robotic pauses, odd pronunciations, or a lack of emotional nuance during the call.
